Stream Monitoring Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Tasks

Volunteers will assist certified stream monitors with the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy in evaluating local water quality. Volunteer duties include transporting equipment as well as collecting, sorting, and counting samples of aquatic organisms dwelling on stream bottoms in order to generate a score of stream health. The data is submitted to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and used to target streams for further monitoring, habitat restoration, and pollution mitigation efforts.

Stream Monitoring Events

All events are outside and may be cancelled due to the weather and stream conditions. To confirm whether the event is on, please text Ethan at 512-705-0064. Please bring waterproof boots if you have them for wading in the stream. Long pants for protection are recommended. Monitors will wait up until 10 minutes after the event start time for participants to arrive and then head over to the stream site. A representative of Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy or Riverside High School will be present to sign volunteer logs.
